The Cathedral Catholic boys and girls wrestling teams are off to a strong start this season, fueled by relentless training and commitment—even through the holiday break. With several dual meets and tournaments under their belts, the teams are hitting their stride as the most intense part of the season begins.
The Dons' boys team showcased their strength early on with a dual meet victory over La Jolla on December 18, securing a 48-31 win. The matchup highlighted the team's depth and determination, with key performances across several weight classes contributing to the win.
The girls team opened the new year with the Lady Chieftain Warriors of the West Tournament on January 4 at Clairemont High School. In their first tournament of the season, the Lady Dons put on an impressive display.
Lilyana Torres-Wynne (122) battled her way to a sixth-place finish, while
Giulia Verardi (127) claimed fifth place, earning spots on the medal podium and setting a solid foundation for the rest of their season.
That same day, the boys team competed in the Mission Hills Invitational Tournament, facing stiff competition from across the region. The Dons didn't disappoint, finishing ninth overall out of 30 teams. Individual highlights included
Lucas Michelsen (108) earning a third-place medal,
Ayers Reich (134) finishing fourth,
Evan Rodriguez (159) taking fifth, and
Kaan Misirlioglu (122) placing sixth. Every wrestler left it all on the mat, showcasing the team's grit and hard work.
Earlier in the season, at the Granite Hills Invitational, the team saw additional standout performances.
Lucas Michelsen (106) brought home a third-place medal, while
Patrick Hook (113) finished in fourth place. Freshman
Aaron Sarmiento (106) made a stellar debut at the ECI JV Tournament, going undefeated with one decision and three pins to secure a first-place finish in his first outing as a Don.
With their next competition—a tri-meet at San Diego High School on January 8—the Dons are laser-focused on maintaining their momentum. Their dedication and perseverance through the holidays have set the stage for what promises to be an exciting and successful season.
