Cathedral Catholic boys' volleyball had a remarkable season, reaching the Open Division Finals for the third consecutive year, having clinched the championship in the previous two.
The match on Saturday against their rivals, Torrey Pines, ended in a 27-25, 25-23, 25-19 defeat for Cathedral Catholic, in a game played at Southwestern College.
"We've had an incredible run these past three years," said Cathedral Catholic coach Pat Bonner. "Though we didn't come out on top this time, our team showed tremendous effort and skill."
Torrey Pines, having not won a CIF championship in boys volleyball since 1993, were determined to break their long drought. They played a solid game, finishing their season with an impressive 30-3 record.
"Our team has been resilient and has faced tough competitors all season," said Bonner. "Facing Torrey Pines, a team we've encountered many times, was another opportunity for our boys to demonstrate their growth and perseverance."
Throughout the season, Cathedral Catholic (22-7) battled tough competition in their non-league matchups to help them prepare for their eventual playoff run. Once league play began, the boys couldn't be stopped, going undefeated and winning Western League for a fourth year in a row.Â
"Our seniors have been outstanding," Bonner said. "Ryan and Charlie have been integral to our success and their leadership has been invaluable." Senior
Ryan Enos, who delivered 17 kills in the final match, and fellow senior
Charlie Sutton, contributed eight kills.
"This team has come a long way from where we started," Bonner noted. "Our season opener against Eastlake was tough, but it set the stage for the growth and improvement we've seen. I'm incredibly proud of how far we've come."
Cathedral Catholic's achievement of reaching the finals three times consecutively highlights the program's strength and the players' commitment. As the team looks ahead, the experience gained from this year's finals will undoubtedly fuel their drive for future successes.
"We've built something special here," Bonner concluded. "Our focus remains on continuous improvement and fostering a positive attitude. Wins and losses come and go, but the character and development of our players are what truly define us."
