Cathedral Catholic boys basketball passed its first major test of the season with a gritty 54-49 road victory over Del Mar Heights rival Torrey Pines on Friday night, completing the doubleheader sweep with the girls and earning bragging rights in a hostile gym.

The teams went back and forth in the first half, heading into the break tied at 30-30. Cathedral Catholic took control in the third quarter, tightening defensively and generating momentum on offense to lead 44-38 going into the fourth.

Down the stretch, the Dons demonstrated composure. Maximiliano Meza stepped to the line and confidently made a crucial free throw in the final minute to create a two-possession lead and seal the win.

All the scoring came from Cathedral's senior quartet, as Max Meza, Charles Barajas, Tyler Vosburgh, and Sei'Mir Roberson combined for all 54 points in the victory. The Dons' defense set the tone in the second half, forcing turnovers and capitalizing when it mattered most.

With the win, Cathedral Catholic improves to 3-0 on the season and now prepares for a big Top-10 showdown against San Marcos tomorrow night at the Victory Christian Showcase (5:30 p.m.).
