The Cathedral Catholic boys golf team is off to an incredible start to the spring season, securing the No. 1 overall ranking in San Diego County with an impressive team differential of -2.29. The Dons have shown depth, consistency, and star power, making them one of the teams to beat this year.
Leading the charge is the dynamic duo of senior standouts Trevor Cox and Michael Riebe, who are committed to play golf at the University of California, Berkeley, and Vanderbilt, respectively. Cox '25 is currently ranked No. 2 individually in the county with a differential of -1.30, while Riebe '25 is close behind at No. 3 with a differential of -1.26. The Dons' lineup boasts incredible depth, with Yunze Wang '28 (No. 10), Brady Neal '27 (No. 13), Oliver Mayson '27 (No. 16), Frank (Weiqiao) Zhang '27 (No. 17), and Wyatt Seltzer '27 (No. 27) all ranked among the top 30 golfers in San Diego County.
The Dons started their season on a high note, dominating the weather-shortened John Morello Open. Led by Riebe, Cox, Eagle, and Frank, the team shot an astonishing -15 over 36 holes. Riebe took home the individual title, and Cox earned a spot in the top five, showcasing their elite form early on.
In their first league match against Scripps Ranch at Torrey Pines North, the Dons fired a +1 team score of 181, proving they're not slowing down anytime soon. Riebe continued his stellar play with a 33, while Cox followed close behind with a 35. Cole contributed a solid 36, highlighted by an eagle, while Oliver added a 37. Dylan battled through some tough greens to card a 40, and Ryan rounded out the lineup with a 43.
With this kind of firepower and depth, the Dons are poised for a dominant run through the rest of the season. As the top-ranked team in the county, they've set the bar high — and they're only getting started.
