The Cathedral Catholic inline hockey team came within seconds of delivering a statement victory over the top-ranked and undefeated SD Inline Combined South team in what was arguably their most complete performance of the season.
The Dons struck early and decisively, with freshman
Kellan Morneau scoring just 10 seconds into the game to give Cathedral an immediate 1 - 0 lead. By the end of the first period, the Dons had built a 2 - 0 advantage and looked poised to control the pace of the game.
SD Inline South responded in the second period, tying the game at 2 - 2, but the Dons regained the lead thanks to a breakaway goal by junior
Brady Nelson. The teams continued to trade goals in a back-and-forth final period. With under two minutes remaining, Cathedral held a 5 - 4 lead and entered a power play with momentum clearly on their side.
However, an unfortunate bounce led to the game-tying goal for SD Inline South. With just five seconds remaining in regulation, the top-seeded team capitalized on a final opportunity, scoring the game-winner and escaping with a narrow 6 - 5 victory.
Despite the heartbreaking finish, Cathedral's performance was full of highlights. Goal scorers included
Kellan Morneau and
Luke Ring, each with two goals, and
Brady Nelson with one. In goal, sophomore
Jackson Mann delivered a standout performance, making several critical saves that kept the Dons in front for much of the game.
Notably, three of SD Inline South's first four goals came on power plays, underscoring the importance of disciplined play at this level.
The Dons conclude the regular season in fourth place with a 5 - 4 record and now turn their attention to the postseason. Cathedral Catholic begins its playoff run on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:00 p.m. against Del Norte. A win would set up a highly anticipated rematch with SD Inline South at 7:30 p.m. that same evening.
Cathedral proved they can compete with the very best. Now, the focus shifts to finishing strong in the playoffs.
