Cathedral Catholic's flag football program couldn't have asked for a stronger start to the 2025 season, as both the Varsity and JV squads rolled to back-to-back victories in their opening week of play.
Monday vs. Rancho Bernardo
The JV team set the tone early with a commanding 41-0 shutout over the Broncos. The defense was relentless, highlighted by a Leyla Ridgway '28Â interception and Maria Cavallaro '28Â pick-six. Offensively, Adeline Santos '29 connected for three touchdown passes, Lauren Gaviola '28 contributed both an interception and a rushing score, and Norah Hampton '29 hauled in a receiving touchdown. Finley Carroll '28 was perfect on extra points, converting three.
Varsity followed suit with a 34-6 win, fueled by a ball-hawking secondary. Sophia Fleming '28 had a career night with two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and seven flag pulls. "Nia" Alofania Talataina '28 added two interceptions, while Larisa Olivas '27 and Ella Nickels '27 each grabbed one. In the trenches, Anna Janis '28 posted five sacks, and Madison Modic '28 recorded four sacks and two flag pulls. On offense, Sabrina Jutronich '28 threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 48 yards, Emma Weeks '27 tossed one touchdown pass, and Brooke Volpp '28 caught two touchdowns.
Thursday vs. #3 Grossmont
Thursday's matchup brought a stricter test, as the Dons hosted the #3-ranked Grossmont Foothillers. Both Cathedral squads rose to the challenge.
JV cruised to a 33-6 win behind a balanced attack and stingy defense. Varsity's defense completely shut down Grossmont, posting a 12-0 shutout. The Dons' secondary snagged four interceptions, with Sophia Fleming '28 picking off two more passes. The defensive line, led by Madie Modic '28 and Anna Janis '28, applied constant pressure, disrupting the Foothillers' passing game and never allowing their quarterback to get comfortable.
With a 4-0 combined start for both teams, the Dons have built strong momentum heading into league play. Cathedral Catholic returns to action Tuesday, on the road, against Patrick Henry to open the league schedule.
